Blake Blaylark will turn 9 on Jan. 21.
For this birthday, the Corte Sierra Elementary third-grader decided he wanted to give something back to the community. His wish: To give new socks to the homeless.
So in honor of this year's birthday -- and the commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Day -- he hopes to collect 250 pairs of new adult socks from the community, as well as to serve chicken noodle soup to the homeless.
He has named the effort "Blake's Birthday Blessing."
When his parents asked him why he wanted to do this, the Litchfield Park youth said that so many people have been a blessing to him and so he would like to be a blessing to someone else.
Blake and his family will be at Sibley's West during our "Snowbird Saturday" from noon to 2 pm Saturday, Jan. 19.
Sibley's West guests are invited to bring a pair of new adult socks to the store for "Blake's Birthday Blessing." As a thank-you, we will extend a 10-percent savings on your purchases.
Thanks, Blake, for the reminder that the best gifts are the ones you give to someone else.
